A Word About Stress . . .
Background: It wasn't until the Canadian physician Hans Selye (1907-1982) came onto the scene that we began to think of stress as emotional stress. Prior to Dr. Selye, stress always meant pressure, tension or force placed onto or between objects. Today the first definition of stress reflects emotional stress thanks to his contributions of more than 1500 articles and 30 books by Dr. Selye.
What causes stress for one person does not necessarily stress another. Skydiving or public speaking are good examples. It's often said that stage fright is the number one stressor of people while other people are very comfortable talking in public. Sky diving is seen as a thrill by skydivers and while other people would not dare jump out of a perfectly good airplane. So it is with you and me. We all define our own list of stressors. What are yours? Will you take steps to reduce your stress? Stress reduction techniques may include: Prayer *Counting to 10 or 100 or if needed 1000. (By the time you reach 100 or 1000 what upset you 2 or 10 minutes ago is no longer as upsetting.) *Tightening and relaxing your muscles *Massage *Experiencing Good Memories.
